Discovery hour

at the 'La Decouverte'bar

wooden sign saying 'la decouverte'

This is my first post in a long while - Covid has thrown the whole world out of kilter and things are changing everywhere. Here at Child friendly gites, it's been a difficult 18 months and we arn't out of it yet. The quiet summers in 2020 and 2021 have given Chris and I time to think about what we offer. Over the winter I had time to take some online courses and we now have a brand new licence to run a bar !! We agreed we are both too old to be serving drinks late into the night , so we'll be doing things a little differently.

We have created a new area, making better use of some unused space . A few times each week in the early evening we shall also be offering 'discovery hour' : discover Pineau; discover sparkling wine; discover Alsace wine etc . Each one will be a set price per person and you'll receive a couple of glasses of delicious wine and at least an hour of Chris' time chatting about the wine, how to taste wine and anything else you'd like to know about wine. For 2 people or 8 (or more) it will be an hour of 'discovery' and hopefully an enjoyable experience too ! This is a new venture and we are open to ideas of new wines / themes to discover.

Update 2025 : Our discovery wine tasting events have proven to be extremely popular. They take place at 18hr and last about 1hr to 1hr30 . Bring baby and the highchair along and the older children will happily play with their new friends in the garden but can come and go too. It's like having a night out without actually going anywhere!

café style tables and chairs

We have local wines for sale. Most available to buy by the glass or the bottle served at the table but also to take away to your cottage too. We will also have chilled beer and chilled soft drinks as well. There won't be specific opening hours as such but we will occasionally open up in the evening or lunch time or during the pottery and fabric painting - both Benjamin and Thomas will be allowed to earn some pocket money by opening up the bar when they want to . If there's a group of you (6 + adults) we'll open on request too subject to our availability.

a bottle of Pineau being poured into a glass

We held our very first discovery event just recently with a group of very enthusiastic Dutch families. They were keen to learn more about wine in general. They tasted a local red, merlot and a white, chardonnay from the same winery . They were able to chat and ask lots of questions. It was relaxed and informal and started early at their request and went on for nearly 2 hours as they were so keen ! Everyone really enjoyed it and were more than happy with the 12€ per adult price. So our first discovery event was a success and we look forward to offering regular events next year. We hope you'll join us.

A man teaching holidaymakers about wine

We will have a takeaway drinks list too, soft drinks, beer and wine of course - including sparkling, just whatsapp us before 8pm with your order and we'll deliver to your door - no need to have cash at hand as we can now take cards.

The bar area itself will be available to use all the time. You could sit and drink your morning coffee or enjoy an apero on an evening when there is no other event. It's all work in progress and our ideas may change over time but we hope you'll join us in this new venture of discovery.
